Rainbow Camp provides a Christian experience for children ages 8 to 12 years who are affected by chronic disease, primarily HIV/AIDS. The camp provides a protected, secure “re-creational” environment for children marginalized by a lifetime of disease, or families compromised by AIDS. The week is a time for renewal in the beautiful foothills of the Blue Ridge at the Bishop Claggett Center just south of Frederick Md.
Rainbow Camp began in1995 and has continued annually this summer marking the twelfth year. In the first years there were 20 campers, in recent years there have been between 40 and 50 campers, the majority coming from the inner city of Baltimore but also from the surrounding Maryland areas wherever the need exists.
The Camp provides:
5 days residential camp
Skilled nursing and medical care for campers
A safe and secure loving environment
Plenty of good healthy food
Fun, challenge, self-discovery
New friendships
Program highlights include swimming, chapel, art and crafts, sports, interactive games, story telling, field trips, challenge ropes course and campfire. The staff is made up of dedicated and skilled volunteers from several parishes, e.g. St. Matthias, St. Bartholomew’s, and St. James in the Diocese of Maryland, as well as students from area colleges, and high schools. Participating organizations include AIDS Interfaith Residential Center, Chase-Brexton Clinic, AIRS, Baltimore Pediatric HIV Center, Back to Basics, Evelyn Jordan Center.
